For those of you who love electronic dance music (EDM), and maybe some of you who’ve never given it a chance, I’ve created a list of my top 10 favorite EDM artists. I would consider myself still new to the EDM scene, considering I’ve only been listening since 2015. I have, however, been to Electric Daisy Carnival (EDC) in Las Vegas, Nevada in 2017. I now plan to go every year, as long as I am able. This top 10 list is probably the one for me that changes the most. I constantly discover new artists that I love. I really hope you enjoy this list of my favorite EDM artists.
The Chainsmokers – A lot of people don’t realize that this EDM duo’s first popular song was “#Selfie” back in 2014. Yea, that’s right! Their style of music strayed away from that song when they released their debut EP in October 2015, called Bouquet. This EP included their hit song, “Roses”. This song is what got me hooked to this amazing EDM duo and I’ve been following them ever since. I’m sure y’all have heard one or two of their few hit songs, such as “Something Like this” collaborated with Coldplay and “Closer” with Halsey. My favorite songs by them are “Don’t Let Me Down”, “Young” and “It Won’t Kill Ya”. Fun fact: I met my boyfriend at a Chainsmokers pool party in Las Vegas.
Galantis – This Swedish EDM duo is currently my go-to playlist for basically any mood I’m in. Like many, I had only heard their popular songs, “Runaway (U & I)” and “No Money”, as well as one of their not so popular songs, “You”. That is, until I watched their set at EDC Las Vegas 2017. I fell in love instantly and it was one of my favorite sets of the entire event. Since then, I’ve listened to and loved every one of their songs. I have seen them again live, in Chicago. I plan on seeing them any chance I get from here on out, and I suggest you give them a chance, they won’t let you down. My favorite songs include “You”, “Gold Dust”, “The Heart That I’m Hearing”, and “Louder, Harder, Better”.
Audien – Another EDM dj that I discovered at EDC Las Vegas 2017. I had never heard of him before I watched his set and he blew me away. I began to dive deep into his music and found so many songs that I like. Some of these songs include “Hot Water” and “One More Weekend”, as well as his remix of Bastille’s “Pompeii”.
Martin Garrix – This 21 year old superstar has taken the EDM world by storm. I couldn’t believe he was as young as he was when he entered this scene (16 years old) and was named a top 100 dj by DJ Mag at only 20 years old. Most EDM artists have a unique sound that they take on and it often makes them recognizable in a song. Martin Garrix is not this way at all. He utilizes so many different styles of EDM and it makes him so versatile. I enjoy listening to every song, because not one is the same and it isn’t annoying and repetitive like many EDM artists can be. Some of my favorite songs of his are “Don’t Look Down”, “Scared to Be Lonely”, “Oops”, and “In the Name of Love”.
Tiesto – Alright, you didn’t think I’d make a list of my top 10 favorite EDM artists and not include the EDM god? Ya, you better not have thought that. I had always loved Tiesto, but when I saw him live at EDC Las Vegas…I was mind blown. There is a HUGE difference in every other EDM artist there and him. His transitions between songs is unparalleled to anybody else in the industry. I could go on and on about how amazing he truly is. Sometimes, people think the hype surrounding an artist is ridiculous or undeserving…in this case, it is not. He is the best at what he does and I get excited whenever he releases new songs. Some of my favorite songs of his include “BOOM”, “Scream”, and “The Only Way is Up” which is collaborated with Martin Garrix.
Kygo – A 26 year old Norwegian dj who gains a lot of his popularity by remixing songs by popular artists, such as Coldplay, Avicii, and Ed Sheeran. Behind Tiesto, Kygo was my next favorite artist to see at EDC Las Vegas. However, I ended up missing his set. I heard it was absolutely amazing and I am heartbroken that I missed it, but I plan on seeing his set this upcoming EDC. Although they haven’t announced the lineup, I can’t imagine Kygo would be someone left off. Some of my favorite songs by him are “Stay”, “First Time”, and “Stole the Show”.
Zedd – This Russian-German EDM artist has definitely made himself known in the pop culture by doing collaborations with pop artists, such as Selena Gomez, Kesha, Alessia Cara, and Liam Payne. I’ll be honest, I really only liked his pop-like songs at first until I experienced his set at EDC Las Vegas. I discovered he is so much more than just a pop collaboration dj. His set did consist of a few of these songs, but Zedd does not mess around. He had so many head banging and hard-hitting EDM songs, I was honestly shocked. He gave an already fan, a new perspective that day. My favorite songs by him are “Beautiful Now”, “Stay”, and “Clarity”.
Snails – A Canadian dj who specializes in the EDM music style referred to as dubstep, trap, drum and bass, etc. He is another artist I did not know of until EDC Las Vegas 2017. At EDC they have a section called the “Bass Pod” where they have all the bass-heavy artists do their sets. This area is often full of head-bangers and mosh pits. If that at all gives you an idea of what type of EDM music this is, I don’t know what would. I was so fascinated with it when Snails was performing that I ended up looking him up afterwards and really began to like it. Listening to him then turned me onto other artists like him, such as Jauz and Slushii. Some of my favorites songs of his are “Cannonball” and “Deep in the Night”.
Above & Beyond – An English EDM trio who have placed in the top 5 of DJ Mag’s Top 100 dj’s. This is yet another EDM group that I had never heard of until EDC Las Vegas. Their set was fantastic and I dug deep into their music after EDC, which believe me, they have a lot to dive into. My favorite songs by them are “We’re All We Need”, “Surge”, and “My Own Hymn”.
Illenium – The 25 year old American dj who specializes in future bass and melodic dubstep. I love this EDM artist because his sound is different. The music is not as fast paced as other EDM music. I really enjoy it. I missed his set at EDC Las Vegas and I am hoping that I get to see him at some point in the future. Some of my favorite songs of his include “Fractures”, “Where the Wild Things Are”, and “It’s All on U”.
